New Coordinator of Graduate Certificate in Research

Congratulations to Derek Rowlands who has been appointed to the position of Coordinator Graduate Certificate in Research.

This is a new position which will coordinate a training program for new research students. It is valuable for the Library to have this connection with the program, as the literature review is an important starting point for these students.
Derek will be on a two year secondment to this position. Given the experience he has with copyright, it is reassuring that he has another position at UTAS rather than leaving us completely. He will be taking up his new appointment on 20th September.

Client Services Forum

On Monday 30th August 38 staff from Client Services attended a Forum at the Grange in Campbell Town. As well as enjoying good food and good company, staff were involved in a variety of group activities to engage in team building, discuss topics pertaining to Client Services and participate in planning for the Library.

Angela Hayes from the UniGym conducted a team building exercise and a 15 question health and wellness survey to test our knowledge before providing some information about the Active UTAS programs being offered.

Prue Senior, Senior Client Services Officer at the Launceston Campus Library, facilitated some group discussion on our Client Services Culture with staff exploring issues including ITR and Library Systems support, communication, procedures and other client services documentation, and staff development.Kay Hughes, Senior Client Services Officer at the Morris Miller Library, presented on the “Pod” service model that is being introduced in academic libraries across Australia including the Morris Miller Library.

Linda Forbes

Linda Forbes, the Policy and Planning Librarian, worked with staff on a planning session asking Client Services staff what they would do if they were University Librarian.There was a lot of lively discussion and lots of great ideas were shared. The ideas and suggestions that were presented on the day will be collated into a document to be shared with the wider Library community.I would like to offer my thanks to the presenters, the many staff who assisted with organising the event, the participants, and the staff who remained behind staffing the service points to allow colleagues to attend. Without you all this event would not have been possible.

Farewell to Tricia Vierra

Thank you for the wonderful goodbye. I am touched by the number of you who came to say goodbye at the morning tea and lunch as well as those who could not come to the events but took time to wish well. I truly appreciate the thought that went to selecting the necklace (perfect!) and the gorgeous flowers and the generous gift certificate to my favourite bookshop (and coffee venue)!
The times here have been some of the most enjoyable of my career and I thank you all. We have accomplished a lot together over the past 5 years.
I will say hello (briefly) when I am in the neighbourhood and will welcome any emails (with news, gossip and greetings) sent to my home address at ahtv@internode.on.net.

Morris Miller redevelopment - almost there!

We're not far off moving into our new areas, as you can see from the photos below, everything has a space age, light feel and even if there are a few issues still to be resolved, it's looking great. I might even come to miss the excitement of having a jackhammer just through the floor while I (try to) work and the unexpected network outages and strange smells we've come to enjoy over the last six months.....

New career for Ian?

Cherie, Susan and Ian have been feeling sorry for Wendy being on her own in the videoconference room Tuesday after Tuesday for SMG and so organised a few refreshments this week. Catering is taken very seriously in the Launceston Campus Library as this photo will show (the biscuits were topped with smoked salmon, pate and cheese).
