AMC - LC conversion

The conversion of the AMC Library collections from Dewey to LC was celebrated with a lunch on 8th July. This very successful pilot is informing planning for the conversion of the Launceston collections later this year. All new items added to Library’s collections are now being classified in LC. The inter-semester break is coming to an end, and so is the AMC Relabelling Project.The last of the call numbers have been switched in Horizon from Dewey to LC and our intrepid gang of sticky fingered relabellers and shelvers are completing the fiction and A-V collections and the student reports.The main collection looks beautiful (as much as a collection of books and reports can) with the new labelsIt has been a great team effort, and locally I have appreciated the hours of work Marg Mallett and Michelle Lucas have undertaken to keep the project rolling along and sorting out problem texts, and Prue to manage the rosters of staff for the project and the client services desk. Prue led the organization of the shelf arrangement of texts. In the south, Andrew Parsons and Angela have fielded most of our queries. Andrew may be in the south but the AMC still haunts him. We also thank Heather Excell with producing beautiful signage and new AMC bookmarks. Thanks to Di Worth in taking up the gauntlet to allow AMC to be the first in a DDC conversion and switching the call numbers daily, even during sickness. Thanks to Graeme Rayner to managing the project in the south so we had a manageable project to run in the north when it was handed over. Finally, thanks to all who came to the AMC Library to relabel.This LC conversion has actually been in progress since October 2008, when the AMC serials collection was being culled and prepared for relabelling over summer. I must admit, Michelle and I are glad it is over and the collections are done. We wish LTN well in their conversion and Michelle and I are planning to take leave for the next 8 months to avoid the LTN reclassification. It will be a pleasure to become a Liaison Librarian again.
