This must have been in the day before women were allowed to be librarians as it is assumed the "librarian" is a man. Maybe the "assistant" is a woman and that is where the takeover started...because the men were found wanting!
This is my favourite of the series - maybe we should get it reprinted! Although the threat of paying 1s may not go far towards preventing injury being done to the books.
